The best weekend of wrestling of 2020

For the first time in what feels like years, professional wrestling took center stage for a whole weekend with a diverse showing of performers and matches. To say there was an abundance of wrestling would be stating the obvious, like firing Velveteen Dream.

Before we get to the list of ten best moments of the best weekend of wrestling, lets look at a few of the moments that were good, but didn't make the final list.

Unlike last week, when VxS ran into venue issues, there were non issues this weekend. Some inclement weather concerned Beyond Wrestling, but they got off fairly easy from Mother Nature on Sunday.

Regarding last weeks VxS show, I have had multiple sources who have reached out to me, with the back story on the issues they ran into, but i've been sworn to a pinkie swear that I wouldn't release that information until given the okay.

Probably one of the most underrated matches of the weekend, Big Beef and Levi Everett destroyed each other in a hard fought battle at "BLP We're Back@ A Wrestler's Story. For 10 minutes, it was violent and delicious.

In what seems to be a pretty polarizing move, Erick Stevens dropped his BLP championship to Calvin Tankman, who held it for about a minute before Jake Something came out and took the belt from Tankman. Twitter was angry - but we don't know if this is a singular moment, or the kick off of something bigger between Jake Something & Tankman.

And per usual, Sarah Shockey was a true delight on commentary for the BLP shows - but was met with a new challenger for most entertaining wrestling commentator: Nick Fucking Gage. Yup, Gage jumped on the mic for several matches during several shows this weekend and sounded like a million bucks.

And congratulations to Alex Colon, who won GCW's Tournament of Survival for the second straight year. Fucking nuts.

NUMBER TEN: The Tent Incident - BLP "We're Back!"

So, the thing that is great about Indie Wrestling is that most shows contain elements of hard hitting action, intergender bangers and some sort of comedy reprieve before we get back to the blood battles. At "We're Back!", a four-way battle consisting of Cabana Man Dan, Colin Delaney, Jake Manning & Dan The Dad took place that, at times, had Shockey about to lose it. Well, I did lose it when, for whatever reason, a tent was pulled into the ring and each man was pulled into the tent by someone - and at some point in the tent Manning and Dad exchanged pants; at least, I feel like they did. It was a truly imaginative moment in Indie Wrestling history.

NUMBER NINE: Gangrel

I guess what they say about vampires is true: they are ageless. Gangrel looked like he hadn't missed a beat against the King of Kink, Effy. The premise of the match was great. Effy was seeking immortality via the suckage of blood via Gangrel - but every time Effy begged for that sweet tooth embrace, Gangrel seemed disgusted by the desire. Low and behold, it was just a ruse by Effy the whole time.

Or was it?

NUMBER EIGHT: Pat McAfee can fucking wrestle.

Twitter was abuzz at the performance sports commentator and former NFL kicker Pat McAfee put on at NXTXXX against Adam Cole. McAfee took to the air a few times, generating a quick buzz around social media as the "best non-wrestler wrestling performance of all time.".

NUMBER SEVEN: AEW's Red Wedding ....

Shock poured over social media as Mr. Brodie Lee not only defeated Cody (in less than four minutes), but manhandled the now former TNT champion. But that wasn't all.

After the match, The Dark Order laid waist to the first family of AEW, destroying Cody and family and leaving AEW fans stunned.

NUMBER SIX: The Rise of Elayna Black

You will see a very concerted narrative within the next few picks as the REAL WOMENS EVOLUTION in pro wrestling can be found on the Independent Wrestling scene.

At the forefront of this movement is the maturation of Elayna Black. Now, bWbWrestling.com has been watching Black for a while now; I've stated numerous times in the past about the bright future of Black. And it seems that the future in now the present as Black wrestled two matches this weekend.

Her match at BLP against Billie Starkz wasn't the greatest thing we've seen - and it seemed as though Black herself was not happy with the way it went, but the next day at GCW's Jimmy Lloyd's Jersey Shore, Black participated in her first death match against Lloyd himself. And man, did she impress. The guidance of Lloyd's expertise in these types of malays showed, but there was a confidence in Black that we haven't seen thus far.

Look out.

NUMBER FIVE: Alex Zayne is NOT HUMAN.

I'm sure by now you've seen the gif if you didn't order the ppv: Alex Zayne gives no fucks about fear. I don't know what his typical Taco Bell order is, but whatever it is, I think I need to start eating it.

Zayne is the future of professional wrestling. That's not even a question anymore.

NUMBER FOUR: Women's Death Match Champion: Allie Kat

Can we just sit and think back to how much Kat has also grown in the business over the past year? I think she would admit that as a technical wrestler there was something missing. Something not clicking. But once she joined GCW and bled that first time, there was some sort of rebirth, a baptism by blood that has resurrected her career and made her a fan favorite amongst many.

The match against Atticus Cogar was as violent a death match as you'll ever see - and she likes it that way. She doesn't want Death Match Lite's on her cagematch resume. She want's to bleed just like Nick Gage.

NUMBER THREE: Kylie Rae v. Blake Christian

On the other side of the wrestling spectrum, you have Kylie Rae. I don't think there is a better performer in the business right now. Is she perfect? No. No one is. But she has all the attributes of perfection: The looks, the attitude, the in-ring skills and the IT factor. She's hard to ignore, hard to look past.

Then you put her in the ring with one of the top five soon to be superstars of the world, Blake Christian, and you have yourself a recipe for amazingness.

And for 20 minutes, they ruled the wrestling world. And for a moment, the world was right.

NUMBER TWO: You Didn't See It Coming - Roman Reigns Returns.

So does this mean Covid-19 is over? Reigns returned last night at SummerSlam in front of a packed ThunderDome at the end of the Braun Strowman/Fiend match. So what does this mean going forward?

Are you happy to see Reigns back? Or worried that maybe he's coming back to soon during this pandemic?

NUMBER ONE: Thunder ... Thunder .... Thunder ...ROSA.

Boy oh boy, was that amazing? Was that shocking. Was that an "Are you paying attention now," moment. For weeks the criticism of AEW was that the women weren't being featured enough on TV. Well folks, I think we're about to see some interesting TV.

I wrote earlier this week about the NWA's plans for the future - I never once took into consideration a working relationship with AEW - last we left off, they were working with ROH. Sadly, I think that relationship is now dead with Marty Scurll's name being involved in the #SpeakingOut movement.

Do we see other female talent from the NWA making there presence known in AEW? I don't know ... but if I see Allysin Kay on Wednesday night, you know i'm marking out.
