The more wrestling that I watch, I learn deferent aspects of the sport - and it feels like everything comes full circle within the context of storytelling.

July 4th, 2019 is when I became aware of Alex Zayne. He was wrestling Tony Deppen at GCW's "Backyard Wrestling.

Just over a year later, he's wrestled Deppen in what is being billed as his "last independent wrestling match at GCW's "So Much Fun,". It made me wonder if wrestlers actively think about who they want to "retire," them. Their match was something truly special - one for the history books, for me, personally.

Zayne has been on my podcast twice. How that happened is a funny story. I was at dinner, with my friend Jimmy. During conversation, I brought up Zayne, and Jimmy said he didn't know who he was. I was appalled! I grabbed my phone and pulled up Twitter and threw Jimmy under the bus. Zayne saw the post and it led to our first interview.

He messaged me on Thanksgiving. I remember my heart racing, because this was still very new to me, interviewing wrestlers - which I conducted with the amazing Queen of NE. Alex was in Japan at the time, and most of the show was talking about food - and left us wanting tacos.

I met Alex, face to face, at GCW's "I can't feel your face,". I was with my best friend, and Queen - if you've never been to the Ausbary Park venue, it's amazing. It's very intimate. After Zayne's match, his competitor, Chris Dickinson said he was glad the match was over, because he thought he was going to shit his pants! He was just getting over an illness. I kind of liked seeing that side of the wrestler; the human side.

Zayne hurt his toe in the match, and mentioned that Blake Christian should kiss it. They have such a funny bromanship on twitter. Jabbin' each other mockingly, but when they are in the ring together, it's magic. They have such great chemistry together. Doesn't matter if it's one-on-one or a scramble. You're getting your money's worth when these two tangle.

One of my favorite matches of Zayne's is his match with Chris Bey at GCW's "Take A Picture,". I wish I had been in attendance for this one. It was so fast paced with crazy flips thrown in here and there. Zayne finished the match with a crunchwrap into a taco driver. Amazing.

He is also great on social media. When he was in Japan, he tested out their Taco Bell; it's great. He started a tik tock during the pandemic, that he uses for pranking his girlfriend. But my favorite thing is when he eats Taco Bell with his racoon, Hubert.

Alex has been an amazing person to chat with, to watch grow in the ring and is so humble. He deserves everything that comes to him. I know it's selfish, but I hate losing him from the Indie scene. That doesn't mean I'm not proud of him.

Hopefully he'll get that Taco Bell endorsement, one day.
