This week’s episode of Action Clash is back in good ol’ Hanceville, Alabama! This little town is home to the JC Arena, one of the preferred locales where New South gets wild and crazy. Episode 7 brings all of the excitement back to the JC Arena after we’ve seen several great matches showcased at the Furniture Factory in Huntsville. This week we’ll find out who the new number one contender is for the New South heavyweight championship - whoever it is, are they really ready to take on Donnie Janela at his absolute peak?

On commentary: Dump Sanders and Brandon Williams

A change in the lineup! This week we’ve got the New South Express manning the commentary table in the usual place of Brickster and Mose. I’m quite happy with the substitution; Dump and Brandon know the ins and outs of New South’s roster better than anyone and are qualified to call any given match on the card. They do an outstanding job calling the action this episode, too, especially enhancing an already fantastic main event match.

Match 1: Battle Royal for Championship Contender

The show started off fast and hot this week with a battle royal that would determine New South’s number one contender for the heavyweight championship. The winner, whoever it would be, would face one hell of a challenge against the reigning champ. Donnie Janela is on fire right now and I don’t think anyone is capable at the moment of stopping his momentum. However, all of the entrants in the battle royal wanted their shot at knocking the Steel Dragon off of the top spot in the promotion and they fought hard for the opportunity.

This was by far the most in-ring action we’ve had in seven episodes with several New South talent fighting all at once in the battle royal. Good showing from everyone involved and the dramatic finish came down to the final two entrants, Daniel Perez and Shean Christopher. Just as we thought the Hot Tamale and Ladykiller himself would get his big chance at the New South heavyweight championship, Chris Crunk (who had been eliminated earlier) came back to help his Akuto Death Society brethren with an outside assist that allowed Shean to eliminate Perez and take the spot as New South’s number one contender for the heavyweight title. Shean definitely owes a lot to Crunk here; I’d say if it wasn’t for Crunk he wouldn’t have this opportunity at all. Now it’s time to see how Shean Christopher will do against Donnie Janela...and can he go it alone for once?

Match 2: The Mongrel vs. JD Rush/Jon Averson/Wes Taylor

So I’ve asked before if there’s anyone on the New South roster that’s capable of going up against The Mongrel. We got an answer to that question and a lot more - there are indeed potential opponents, but after seeing this match I’m more likely to say there are potential victims. Not just one but three men went up against The Mongrel in this match. Three of New South’s newest talent tested their mettle against a monster. Although I know these guys will impress us more with time, their efforts here had very little effect compared to the brutality of their one (very large) opponent. The Mongrel racked up another victory and the question remains open - is there anyone, single entity or entire group, that can take out The Mongrel?

Match 3: Dy-Lan vs. Kevin Ryan

Something I really enjoyed seeing in Episode 7 was individual talent stepping up and getting their time in the spotlight. There was strong work done in this match that shows how far both Dy-Lan and Kevin Ryan have progressed as singles wrestlers although they’re certainly proficient on the tag team level as well. Always proud to see Dy-Lan showing off his skills whether it’s on his own or if he’s partnered up with tag team co-champion 2 Fly Ty. I’d like to say I’m just as proud as Kevin, who showed the hell up in this match but ended up showing out in the end by getting the cheap victory after pulling Dy-Lan’s durag over his eyes and getting a rollup pinfall. Come on, damn it!

Main Event: Suge D. vs. Derek Neal

What a damn wrestling match! We’ve seen several amazing main events over the past few weeks on Action Clash, but this one really took it to another level. For one thing, we’d all been waiting to see this fight happen for some time now. Both Suge and Derek delivered the goods and made this match every bit worth the wait. This was one of those main events where you feel transported, and the old-school look of the JC Arena only helped with the visual effect of everything seeming like it was taking place on a mid-80s episode of Mid-South Wrestling

As is custom on Action Clash, this main event was given plenty of time to tell its story (in addition to amazing pre-match promos from both Derek Neal and Suge D. earlier in the episode). I don’t feel like there was one wasted movement that took place here, either. Everything both these guys did had force, meaning, and absolute brutality behind it.

The back and forth action didn’t even subside when Derek Neal’s wayward associates Adam Priest and Steven Michaels showed up to ringside. Their distractions would not cause Suge D.’s downfall on this occasion! No, this was a pure one-on-one fight that would end and begin that way. Just as I thought Suge would rally forth once more with his savage offense as he’d done throughout the match, Derek Neal managed to get the decisive pinfall win at the very end. Impressive showing from both guys and an absolutely entertaining main event.

Post-Show Thoughts

Having Shean Christopher as the number one contender to the New South heavyweight championship is a huge positive for the promotion. If you’ve forgotten what it looks like for a company to build new names, then now’s a good time for you to get in on these upcoming episodes of Action Clash. The young talent that I first set eyes on early in 2020 are now moving up and seeing the benefits of the effort they’ve put in all through a hard year. They deserve it, as the well known chant goes! Now, is that to say I think Shean is ready to take the championship that Donnie Janela has worked his ass off to obtain? NO! I’m calling it now, the upcoming match between Donnie and Shean is going to be an amazing one but there’s no stopping the current champ with the great run he’s on right now. Let’s see, however, how this brother vs. brother battle goes down next week!
