Indy Wrestling Spotlight: MV Young

MV Young has recently become one of the most loved and hated people in independent wrestling, and in pro wresting that is a good thing.  MV is the self-proclaimed leader of the PolyAm Cult, and at last count I believe he is now over 20,000 partners.  I do not know how he has enough time to wrestle while having that many partners, but he has been putting on some match of the year candidates in early 2021 and has even tried to go through a gauntlet of twinks.  Those people that complain about MV and say he is a Twitter wrestler or that he cares too much about how he looks have probably never seen one of his matches because once he steps in the ring, he is completely serious.  Many of his detractors also say that MV is untrained however he was trained by the likes of Lince Dorado and Larry Zbyszko.

MV is one of the most innovative minds in wrestling today.  He has been part of some of the most unique events in the past few years. As part of Uncanny Attractions, he helped run Drags and Dropkicks, which combines drag shows with wrestling.  Uncanny Attractions also put on one of the must ambitious shows of the quarantine period as they did an all-cinematic show, where MV Young defended his Ring Light Championship against Big Game Leroy.  Along with the UA shows, MV hosted an event at NY fashion week consisting of music, fashion, and wrestling.  He also hosted his PolyAm Cult Parties in the backyards in Pittsburgh and Brooklyn, which showcased some of the hottest young up and coming wrestlers.  The PolyAm Cult Parties helped elevate the careers of people like Jody, Jaiden, Ziggy Haim and Erica Leigh.  Eel O’Neal, who has been part of 2 of the PolyAm Cult Parties, says, “MV has done very well. He’s created a party atmosphere that’s really conducive to story driven matches while including the spectacle the casual audience is so enthralled by.”

MV Young may come off as brash and cocky and he is, but his “cult” is one of the most inclusive and uplifting communities in wrestling.  Everyone is included as long as you are not racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ableist or basically just a horrible person.  The PolyAm Cult even comes with its own set of rules.  Some of the rules are inclusive like number 6: “No bodyshaming.  Everyone is beautiful.” Some of them reach out to the community like number 22 “If a Polyam Cult member is in need of uplifting, other members are encouraged to provide whatever is deemed necessary.” Some rules just tell you how to treat MV, like number 40 “Every night, mist MV’s face with eucalyptus oil with a steamer, and MV will do yours as well.”

MV has a very strong connection with his fans.  Alex Centenero, the keeper of the PolyAm Cult rules and a very active member of the PolyAm Cult had the following to say about MV.  “The Polyam Cult has meant so much to me because it's about positivity and loving yourself. He created a space where, through the Polyam Cult rules, he playfully dictated everyday life at the Mansion, but also included important offline ways to love yourself. Through this, I was able to meet some of the people I consider to be my closest friends. Sharing stories about how we were struggling with body image, or someone in need of someone to talk to, the collective group came together to help one another. That's the real power of the Polyam Cult.”

MV started his career wrestling in Pittsburgh, but his popularity really started to skyrocket once he moved to NYC.  Since 2019 MV has worked for VXS facing the likes of Homicide, G-Raver, Brian Pillman Jr and Daniel Garcia.  He also had in incredible 30-minute match in Oregon for Prestige Wresting against Tom Lawlor in 2019.   MV has been on 3 of Effy’s Big Gay Brunch shows, leading a team that included Billy Dixon and O’Shay Edwards against SGC, defeating Ace Perry and Edith Surreal in a 3-way match and having a brutal hard-hitting match against JD Drake.

MV Young has been a very intricate part of the growth of Wrestlers' Lab in the past year.  He became the Wrestlers' Lab Champion by defeating Mr. Grim in a falls count anywhere match.  He is still the champion and has defended the belt against Grim, Jody Himself, Big Callux and O’Shay Edwards.  The owner of Wrestlers' Lab, Chris Ruiz, says, “MV came completely out of left field during a very uncertain time for us; not to mention independent wrestling as a whole. As someone who was already so comfortable thinking outside of the box, or more appropriately the squared circle, he seized the opportunity that we provided him and became our champion. Since then, he's gone above and beyond to represent The Lab in everything that he does. He took us in a new direction. He's taken us along for the ride with his endeavors. It's been a lot of fun, and it's pushed us both creatively and professionally.”

This whole time MV has helped elevate wrestlers from Pittsburgh and young wrestlers from all over the country to a larger audience through the Uncanny Attraction shows and his PolyAm Cult Party shows.  Jody Himself has shared the ring with MV on 2 separate PCP shows and about MV he says, “MV Young is not only one of the best wrestlers in the world, he cares more than anyone in the world and is making a bigger impact than anyone might realize.”  MV has an eye for talent, as it seems that every time I watch one of the PolyAm Cult shows there is new talent that I have not seen before that I immediately fall in love with.  The roster and the crowd at these shows are very diverse and show the strides that MV and others have made in bringing in a new audience to professional wrestling.

Jared Evans was in the main event of PolyAm Cult Party 2 against Billy Dixon in a match that I consider one of the best matches of 2020.  Evans credits MV for being able to see his vison as a performer and put him on such a big stage.  He says, “MV Young has been super helpful and supportive of me as a wrestler. It took a few times seeing me but MV got it and sees what I’m trying to accomplish as a wrestler and entertainer. Being a staple of the PolyAm Cult Party shows means a lot to me especially since I debuted in the main event of the second one. That shows the trust MV has in Jared Evans and I can’t thank him enough for that.”

MV, along with James Stephanie Sterling, have also helped elevate Ryse Wrestling, out of the Pittsburgh area, to a new and larger audience.  They are bringing in fans that either thought wresting was not for them or were never really interested because they were queer.  I look out at an audience at one of the PolyAm Cult Party shows, the Enjoy taping and the return of Ryse and the crowd is completely different from what a wrestling crowd looked like even a year or two ago.  MV has helped make people from the LGBTQ community feel comfortable going to wrestling shows and has made sure that everyone is represented on the shows that he promotes.

The fourth installment of the PolyAm Cult Party will take place in Brooklyn and will stream live July 3 at 4pm on Twitch.  It will include Jody Himself vs Colin Delany which should be an incredible match between a veteran who has wrestled pretty much everywhere against a quickly rising star.  There will be a three-way match between 2 very BIG wrestlers, PB Smooth and Big Callux, and one with a very big ego Jared Evans.  After the last PCP Kimberly Spirit is looking for some revenge against Commander Sterling for giving her a massive chokeslam, she will be teaming up with Zac Belmont against Sterling and The Great Bambina.  Billy Dixon will again be defending the Chocolate City Championship, this time against Eel O’Neal.  MV will be defending his Wrestlers' Lab Championship against Josh Fuller.  Josh is an amazing rising star, but he is going to have to have the match of his career to take the belt from MV at his own show.  Also on that show will be an incredible first time match up as the Ryse champion, Ziggy Haim, takes on the FEST champion, Effy.  Making their return to the PolyAm Cult Party, CPA will take on Big Game Leroy and in a battle between 2 people who have been making huge waves at the PCP shows, Athrun Amada takes on Molly McCoy.
