A Day at the Races
Krüde has been there. Done that. And ran it all back again. Living life to its fullest. Been
to Wilder, KY to see a haunted honky tonk called Bobby Mackey’s Music World. Took a trip to the fox
rescue farm Save a Fox
in MN to take a selfie with Finnegan
Fox. Seen countless live music acts all over the country. Even met the
stars of the Uncle Floyd
tv show back in the day. But I have never been witness to something that
bordered on supreme cuteness and innocently depraved all at once. Until I went
to the first annual Corgi Cup at the Meadowlands Racetrack in
East Rutherford, NJ on October 18,2025.
I have seen dog racing before with greyhounds chasing a
mechanical rabbit around the track. This took place in Massachusetts. Even
wagered on a pooch or two that evening. The corgi racing was dogs and their
owners doing these races for pride and bragging rights. No illicit wagering or
prop bets of any kind. Just good, almost clean all American fun. Kid friendly event
too. Weird to see youngsters at a horse racing track. Probably weird for the
kids to see me enjoying corgi racing.
Corgi racing seems to be a new ‘thing’ these days. Kitschy, yes.
Competitive…sort of. The folks that enter their pups into this race are the
types that love their dogs almost to ludicrous
levels. All the human like attention given to the dogs was admirable but
flawed. I know I wouldn’t want to enter any pet of mine into a competition. Let
them be pets. Not meal tickets. Even if the Corgi winners’ meal ticket at this
race was a $500 gambling voucher (no joke). No real need to travel from 4 hours
away (by car) to participate (like a few competitors did).Local pups (Northern
NJ) were out en force for the event. New Jersey pride is in my stride…
The races were broken down into 8 preliminary races. With
the winners of each race going to the finals. The prelim races were on a grass
area off to the side of the main track. The championship race was on the main
horse track. No wagering. Just healthy cheering and laughing from the sizable
crowd surrounding the finish line area. I let a couple of smaller young girls
stand in front of me so they could see the race properly at the finish line. Krüde
being Krüde : always respectful. The championship race was great. A pup named Ares
won the race and championship. This dog has won a few other races as well.
Good for him. Hope his owner gave him a nice bone for the extreme effort.
I really had fun at this event. The Meadowlands did it
right: Free parking. Free admission. Nice people to chat with. Damn. I am
talking about a racetrack, correct? Usually, it is the exact opposite: Pay to
park. People are assholes. Cigar smell everywhere. The good (bad) old days….Life
goes on. And gets weirder. Mahalo
Love your pets. They are family. Cheers
