AEW Double Or Nothing - Quick Thoughts & Match Ratings

We mourn the tragic deaths of Hana Kimura (1997-2020) and Shad Gaspard (1981-2020), while I'd also like to personally mourn the tragic events of my hometown, this week. If you've watched the news, you may have seen the cities of Wixom, Sanford and Midland, Michigan having gone through what media is called a 500-year flood; sending 11,000 people looking for new homes.

This PPV was exactly what I needed after a shitastic week both in "real life" and in the world of professional wrestling.

The show was highlighted with AEW's best women's match in the history of the company as Hikaru Shida defeated Nyla Rose for the AEW Women's champion. Shida is the third woman to hold the title, ending Rose's first title run at 101 days. Riho, the first champion, holds the record at 133 days.

Putting the strap on Shida was the right move. Over the course of the last several months you could see a confidence growing within not only Shida, but AEW's growing for her.

Cody defeated Lance Archer in a match I felt didn't go where it should have gone, nor felt paced very well, but ultimately in the end, the right man won. Rhodes couldn't lose that match and remain on top of the card, in my opinion.

Moxley held onto his title defeating Brodie Lee in his first PPV with the company, while MJF and Jungle Boy stole the show for many. Kris Statlander and Penelope Ford had a fun match, while we found out Shawn Spears has Tully Blanchard themed underwear.

The Main Event was AEW's version of a "cinematic" wrestling match, I suppose. It was very much different from the Undertaker/Styles match, but felt very akin to the Money In The Box match from WWE a few weeks ago.

Where WWE failed in the comedy aspects of the cinematic matches, not being able to get out of the way of their ego - AEW has now qualms making fun of it's self in the pursuit of entertainment and comedy, to the chagrin of Cult of Cornette types who have lost the vision of what pro wrestling can be.

I think everyone on the show looked tremendous, with the MVP's being Shida, Matt Hardy and Sammy Guevara.
