The Collective: Freelance/Freelance Underground I Don't Think We're In Chicago Anymore Recap
After an absolutely bonkers GCW Joey Janela's Spring Break 4, Freelance took to the ring late Saturday night. Bringing Chicago Style to Naptown, the slightly over two-hour card flew by and had something for everyone I thought. Crazy scramble? Yep. Comedy? Check. Butt stuff??? Surprisingly, on a couple occasions. An all out war for the top title? Definitely. Here's the results:
Isaias Velazquez defeated Lee Moriarty
The bout started with both exchanging armbars and armlocks, plenty of solid chain wrestling in the early minutes. Lee was definitely wearing the damage of the day's matches, kinesio tape on his left bicep and elbow, also on his lower back. Velazquez saw the target and went to work. As the matched picked up, Lee landed a spinning flatliner and Isaias hit a beautiful shiranui...both only good for 2 counts. The Hammer of Dawn got the big win for Velazquez over the Apex of Combat. Good showing by both in a fairly quick match.
Freelance Underground Tag Title Match: Warhausen (Warhorse & Danhausen) defeat the Brothers of Funstruction (Ruffo & Yabbo) (c) by DQ. Brothers retain the belts.
Almost strictly comedy in this one. To start, the clown brothers tried to claim Danhausen as one of their own. Warhorse put a stop to that, then tried to teach the clowns how to headbang. After some back and forth which included “Tequila” over the PA and an extra-long handkerchief chain from Ruffo, the ref caught Yabbo ringing Warhorse's bell with a cowbell and called for the disqualification. Fun fluff, about all I can say.
Freelance Legacy Championship: Robert “Ego” Anthony (w/ Frank the Clown) defeats Effy to become the new champion.
A very aggressive tie-up started this one, roaming all over the ring in front of a very pro-Daddy crowd. As action progressed, Effy hit a huge lucha armdrag off the ropes. Shortly after, Effy pantsed Anthony and Ego attempted to wrestle with his tights around his ankles. Effy dove through the tights with a Superman cover and got a 2 count, quite clever. Recovering from that, Robert hit a big combo of a back drop, German suplex, Northern Lights suplex and a vertical suplex in succession. Anthony was able to slow it down for a while, but Effy came back, going after his nipples. A Northern Lights from Effy snagged a near fall and after a shoe shot from Frank, Ego got one as well. Effy finally got a hold of Frank the Clown and put one of his now-famous Effy Awards statues where the sun never shines! After a bit more action with Effy gaining momentum, Frank hooks an ankle and Ego hooks Effy with the Mandalorian Driver (Rolling DVD) for the pin. Robert Anthony leaves Indianapolis with the belt after the huge assist (as usual) by the Clown.
Freelance Scramble: Blake Christian defeats Alex Zayne, Elayna Black, Storm Grayson, August Matthews and Davey Bang.
Early work including a mean arm snap on Elayna by Blake played into the ending of this one. A fun showcase with many memorable tandem sequences including multiple “can you top this?” dives and an especially impressive backpack stunner/piledriver combo from Grayson to Mathews & Bang. For the finish, Christian wisely went back to the arm of Black and got a submission with a deep armbar.
Freelance Underground Independent Title: Laynie Luck (c) defeated Faye Jackson to retain.
This match had quite a bit of comedy at the onset, but got serious quick. Faye used her “milkshake” to get out of a waistlock while Laynie flossed her way out of one. We then moved on to a random twerk-off but then things got a bit more serious. A Faye hip check sent Luck into the ropes and Jackson smashed her with a lariat. Luck got Faye out of the ring and scored with a low tope, then Jackson took control as they stayed on the floor. Back in the ring, Faye hit a huge Samoan drop for a 2 count. Laynie responded by ramming Faye square in the bum with the unicorn horn on her entrance gear, which also got a 2 count. As the fight wears on, a strong slap to the face from Faye wakes up Luck. Faye misses a cannonball, Laynie misses a Meteora. Huge forearm strikes from Luck, then she lands that Meteora and a spike head scissors into the mat...Faye's out at 2. Jackson tries to come back but misses a Vader bomb, Luck catches her with the UniCutter and gets the win to retain.
3-Way: Shane Mercer defeats Colby Corino and Ethan Page
The Iron Demon Mercer started off showing off his stupid amounts of strength, rag-dolling Corino and Page in the early going. Corino was occasionally successful at avoiding the worst, at one point using a head scissors to get out of a Mercer powerbomb attempt. “Body Guy” Ethan, not to be outdone, suplexed Corino onto Mercer's back in a cool exchange. Colby had a scary slip off the top rope, but was okay and carried on like a pro. The Demon was too much for his opponents as he got the victory with the always impressive Moonsault & Battery (top-rope moonsault powerslam).
Freelance World Championship: Kylie Rae (c) defeats Josh Alexander to retain.
Kylie started the match with a peace offering of DD Munchkins, Alexander slapped them away and out of the ring. One can only assume he prefers Tim Horton's Timkins. Josh then kicked Rae's sparkly backpack out of the ring. Kylie recovered it and then donned wrestling headgear of her own, emulating Alexander's trademark look. Josh was not fond of this also, ripping the head protection off of Kylie.
Alexander started this match not taking Rae seriously at all. Kylie would get a slight adavantage, Josh would roar back with slams and backbreakers. His focus on her back would slow Kylie down but never slowed her spirit. She stayed fighting throughout, stringing together blows, going for covers but not able to put Josh away.
As the war raged towards the 20 minute mark, Kylie got desperate, even raking Alexander's eyes while he was on the top rope. She caught him with a superplex, followed by two low superkicks and a sunset flip...only for 2. Alexander hit his double underhook piledriver, but Kylie kicked out. Josh clamped on an ankle lock and Rae got to the ropes. He gave up the hold at roughly 4 ¾ of the ref's 5 count. Kylie scores with flailing desperate strikes and catches him in the “Charity Case” crossface. As Alexander closes in on the ropes, Rae rolls through to get him back to the center of the ring. Kylie cranks up the pressure and Alexander taps after roughly 25 minutes of action.
Smiley Kylie made a quick exit after the match and ended up withdrawing from the Black Label Pro event on Sunday due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
