In the sweetest moments of this genre of entertainment we watch, you forget that the moments are predetermined, that the reality is fabrication, because at it's very core the sweat and the sounds are real.
Moxley vs. Dickinson was poetry in motion, a violin screaming - Bukowski at the keys a fifth into the night.
We've been waiting ... waiting to feel alive, waiting for Moxley to be released into the BloodSport Universe .. and we got the release we needed Sunday night.
What a battle it was. It had all the key elements: Anticipation. Two amazing combatants.
BIG FIGHT FEEL. Great commentary that let the fighting do the talking, and mystery - with prowrestling, there's not much in the way of surprises anymore. You typically know who's going to win a match - not every time, but most of the time. And I'm sure there'll be those who read this and pound their hairless chests and scream "I KNEW ALL ALONG,".
But me, I'm a fan still, and I'm able to let go of "inside knowledge," and just enjoy a fucking show from time to time. Going into this fight, I didn't think the AEW champion would lose, but as the fight progressed I began to wonder if perhaps we'd see an upset.
Which, honestly, would it be that big of an upset? Dickinson never loses, it seems and that idea in my head really started to push me into this direction of a Moxley loss. Here is the big thing though: This match was so fun that I really didn't care who won at the end; I didn't want it to end to begin with.
I'm not going to analyze every move, every punch, what shoot style is and if this was that. All I can tell you is that it made me feel something I don't normally feel when I watch pro wrestling anymore:
Proud.
I saw two of the best in the world lay it all on the line in a time we're all laying it on the line every fucking day of our lives trying to make it through this shit we call 2020. For 14 minutes and 42 seconds we were able to forget the last ten months for a little while.
Lindsay Snow defeated Allysin Kay in pretty easy fashion to take the Women's Tournament final. Snow was pretty fucking invincible in this tournament, winning both her matches in a combined 10 minutes and change. She defeated Leyla Hirsch in the semi final match in 4 min, 28 seconds. Kay had advanced by defeating Killer Kelly in her semi final match in what I thought was a very entertaining, albeit, sloppy at times fight.
Simon Grimm scored an opening match victory over Matt Makowski in what I thought was a very poor ending. Makowski was ruled eliminated after being dropped on his head.
Calvin Tankman made small work out of Alexander James that ignited the already rowdy crowd - Tankman has the fucking world at his fingertips right now as one of the hottest indie wrestling commodities in the United States.
Erik Hammer defeated Kal Jak in a somewhat insignificant match up, while Tom Lawlor defeated Homicide in a decent battle.
Surprise of the night for me, Davey Boy Smith Jr. beat Josh Alexander in five minutes. I had Alexander winning this match before hand.
