I never thought New South could do anything to make me even momentarily dislike Brett Ison. The Pitbull can do no wrong with me...until he’s in the ring with my guy Donnie Janela. Then the situation’s changeable, to say the least. That situation’s what we have this week in Episode 13’s main event - Brett Ison one on one with the Kung Fu master and Steel Dragon himself. Okay then, we might have an instance here where I’m not so in tune with the brutality the Pitbull likes to dish out. In addition to a main event that amped my anxiety, this episode also featured three other stellar matches that are very much worth a watch!

On Commentary: Dump Sanders and Mose

Have we found the new dream team of New South? In the beginning there was Brickster, who I miss dearly on commentary, but the past weeks have proven Dump and Mose to be just as capable when calling matches. It’s pretty fun to see how the commentary table evolves as the episodes progress. More New South talent at the table, please! We want to hear their thoughts on matches too.

Match 1: Derek Neal vs ‘Hot Tamale’ Daniel Perez (New South Championship match)

Episode 13 started out hot with a title match! Daniel Perez found his time to shine against reigning New South champion Derek Neal. Although the Kings Road Slayer dominated a great deal of this fight, Perez didn’t make this a quick walk in the park for the champ. Good on Perez for busting out that fire and spiciness when it counted here. This only served to make Neal even angrier, however, and he took his anger out on the Hot Tamale with a savage beating that the referee finally stopped. The match ended in Neal’s favor, and he celebrated retaining his championship by delivering a post-match beatdown. When The Ladykillerz came to ringside to defend their partner, Neal’s hoodlum friends Steven Michaels and Adam Priest were quick behind them ready to attack. In the end, Neal and his crew stood tall over the Ladykillerz, showing their dominance just days before Winter Warz.

Match 2: Kevin Ryan vs. Jaden Newman

I think this is my favorite Kevin Ryan singles match so far. He’s had a nice run on his own so far, but no matter how far he’s gotten lately he’s had to look over his shoulder to make sure his former partner Shean Christopher isn’t there to throw him off his balance. Jaden Newman really showed up here against Kevin, too, and the crowd stayed divided between the two from start to finish. Solid match and my favorite singles bout of the night with Jaden picking up the victory after over twelve minutes of nonstop action. Intriguing close to this one with Shean Christopher appearing post-match to play mind games with his former partner only to attack him once Kevin had his back turned. I’d say this feud is past its boiling point...between Kevin and Shean things are ready to ignite and explode.

Match 3: ‘All Beef’ Tyler Franks vs. I Am Sam

Here’s another match where we get to see the singles side of the competitors shine. Tyler Franks, always impressive with his tag team partner Hunter Drake, showed off well in this match against I Am Sam. The latter had Kris McInnis at ringside with him (without the rest of his entourage), and it seemed as if the reluctant McInnis was at least providing some sort of motivation for Sam because he looked pretty damn good against Franks, who brought his own finesse to this match. This one ended with a surprise, however - just as it looked as if Kris McInnis was about to turn on Sam in a climactic moment, we got just the opposite when McInnis attacked Franks. Sam and McInnis have forged the most unbecoming of bonds, it seems, and it’s allowed Sam to pick up a key victory (and a dirty win).

Main Event: Brett Ison vs. ‘Kung Fu’ Donnie Janela

Ohhhh no. This was the match that broke me. The one that had me swearing at Brett Ison just as loudly as the New South faithful had booed and cursed him just weeks before when the Pitbull sent Chris Crunk straight out of New South after an intense Akuto Death Match. This time, Ison went after New South’s standard, Donnie Janela. You just don’t give a beatdown like this to the Steel Dragon...and yet there Ison was, throwing Donnie around and slamming him around like hell. I expected it but damn did it hurt to see happen. Thankfully Donnie showed some decent defense of his own against Ison with some fierce kicks that rocked Ison to the core. This main event ended in the wildest of ways with Ison/Janela going to no contest as the New South locker room emptied into the ring and found themselves in a straight up brawl. Every ongoing feud was in the limelight at the end, and the only way that anything could be resolved was to have everyone meet up in the ring once again for Winter Warz.

Post-Show Thoughts

It’s always a good time when the show before a big rumble-style event ends with a battle in the ring. Winter Warz is the best way for the promotion to put a nice holiday ribbon on 2020 with the New South roster showing out with plenty of surprises in between. Put this next episode of Action Clash on your must-not-miss list, believe me. If you’ve seen or heard about some of the wild things that went down then you already know we’re in for a crazy sleigh ride!
