Where have you been MD 20/20? All had been quiet on the MD 20/20 front over the last few years, and we started to get worried. It wasn't until while recording with Dimples & The Beard that I happened to stumble across a new flavor on the front page of md2020wine.com, when it was revealed there was a new MD 20/20 SPIKED available in select markets.
What exactly is MD 20/20 SPIKED? What is it spiked of? These are the questions that need answers! MD 20/20 has been very vague about this flavor since officially announcing it themselves a few weeks ago. All we know is that it comes in at 20% ABV. so it's 8% higher than the usual varieties of MD 20/20 that come in at 13% ABV. Sweet taste. Smooth finish. Hard bite.
The first thought that came to mind when I saw the name SPIKED was a hard tea flavor. I don't know exactly why, but the name and the color was leading me down that path. After I got my hands on a bottle thanks to good friend of the show Creative Accidents, I saw on the back label that it was listed as a "Red Grape Wine". Now as you all know, there is already a Red Grape Wine variety of MD 20/20, so what makes this one different? Yes, it comes in at 20%, but there has to be more than that, right? There is only one way to find out, so we had to crack it open and give it a try!
I did the first MD 20/20 SPIKED taste test LIVE with Aaron and Uncle on Uncle (the broadcast) this past Friday night. Creative Accidents also sent a bottle to those guys, and seeing as I am now their bottom shelf booze correspondent for the show or "the drinker" as Uncle likes to call me, it was only fitting to crack open the bottle with them.

Now we always need to have a second shot, or redemption in some cases for these bottom shelf beverages. Since Roadhouse and myself were already going to be recording the 2024 bWb Sour Sixteen Preview, I decided to crack the MD 20/20 SPIKED open on Bumming with Bobcat to see how it holds up the second time around.
Overall, it's not a bad flavor, it just wasn't what I had expected going into it. It's a sweet red wine flavor. No additional bells or whistles with this one. No bling bling gold chain or pineapple wearing sunglasses. You are just getting a 20% wine for that extra bite they are talking about on the package. It goes down smooth, but the sweetness can get to you quick. As Roadhouse and myself talked about, there are some flavors of MD 20/20 that if you aren't careful you can find yourself drinking an entire 750ml bottle in one sitting, but I don't see that being the case with this one.
MD 20/20 SPIKED seems like the type that would get the job done if you wanted to pass it around at a party, but it's not something that pulls you in. The bottle design leaves it mysterious enough to give it a try the first time, but is it something you would keeping coming back for time after time like the other flavors of MD 20/20? That remains to be seen.
