Beer Of The Week - Blue Moon Belgian White

To craft, or not to craft, that is the question. We all know that with craft beer comes controversy. What beers are craft? Who owns who? Is that beer still craft? Many beers fall into this category, but one of the more controversial beers to have this problem is Blue Moon Belgian White.

Blue Moon is a Belgian-Style Wheat Ale that's been around since 1995 and is brewed by MillerCoors under the name Blue Moon Brewing Company. Since Blue Moon doesn't explicitly state they are a product of MillerCoors on the packaging, it has caused some complaints from craft beer brewers stating Blue Moon is trying to masquerade as a craft beer to mislead consumers. Is it true or just an oversight? I'm not going to get into the legality of it all here since I just want a beer to drink, so I will leave it to the readers to draw their own conclusions on that one.

Blue Moon Belgian White comes in at 5.4% ABV. and usually garnished with an orange slice to heighten the citrus aroma and taste. I do agree that the orange slice in the Blue Moon adds to the flavor, but many people question if fruit belong in beer? That's a good question after featuring both Bud Light Lime and Bud Light Orange a few weeks ago and the discussions to go along with them. As long as it's not too overpowering, I personally don't have a problem with it.

Blue Moon Brewing Company has expanded over the years with many new varieties including the Harvest Pumpkin Ale which is a former bumwinebob.com beer of the week. In my opinion Blue Moon Belgian White has a smooth finish and is a great beer to enjoy year-round.
