I respect you, Bookerman. I just don't understand you.
Yesterday I wrote about the NWA/ROH relationship and how I felt it was fully effected by the rumors of a resurrected relationship between AEW/NJPW.
Now, one of the key cogs in the whole situation, Marty Scurll, has come to the forefront. It was reported by various wrestling outlets that Scurll, long considered AEW's to have, has signed a very lucrative contract to remain with ROH. Not only has he signed on as talent, he is also now the head of booking.
To my knowledge, Scurll has never booked before. And never at this level, if ever. But he is buddies with some of the most creative individuals in the business, those who have shaped the current state of business, and i'm sure some of that has rubbed off on 31-year old Scurll.
Scurll inherits a ROH roster that has talent. With the likes of Bandido, Brody King, PCO, Dalton Castle, Jeff Cobb, Joe Hendry, and Silas Young. The women's roster isn't amazing, and the division has been booked poorly, there is talent to be found. Maria Manic screams different, while Angelina Love and Velvet Sky are fan favorites. Mandy Leon has a great look.
So there is potential.
The problem with ROH as a whole is the lack of storytelling. TV is just a commercial at this point for the next big show, with very little happening to make it must see TV. With the money there to spend, it's a shame the company is in the spot it finds itself.
Nearly every show there are huge chunks of seating that is blocked off from camera's to hide the reality that ROH is no longer even close to a top American wrestling promotion.
Personally, I don't see what the NWA gets out of this - other than TV time on a syndicated show that doesn't really pull much of a rating, or possibly gains in roads towards a partnership with NJPW through ROH.
And if that's the case ... are we close to a NWA/NJPW/AEW/ROH super group? I mean, I'd sign off on that right now.
And let's be honest, NWA has had it's fair share of social media blunders, what with Jim Cornette sticking his foot in his mouth - but ROH is coming off a very shameful look, firing Kelly Klein after she complained online about the lack of concussion protocol during events, after finding herself in that very predicament at an ROH show.
I will admit to one thing. I am intrigued by the move to make Scurll head booker. And I will tune into TV because of it. So for what it's worth, well done, Ring of Honor.

He will not be the head booker but part of the ROH creative team.
