The fastest hour of Tuesday night was monumental this week! Episode 5 of New South Pro’s Action Clash featured a main event that totally changed the landscape of the promotion. In addition to the championship title match that closed out the show, there was a damn good tag team bout that had Wasted Generation taking on the Dojo Boyz. These matches looked more like all-out wars this week and I say it’s a must-see show!

On Commentary: Mr. Brickster and Mose

One of the great things about Brick and Mose at the commentary table is that they’re positioned near the wrestlers’ entrance, which makes for some funny interactions throughout the show. These two are just as entertaining on camera as they are when they’re calling matches.

Match 1: Rodney Rockchild vs. The Mongrel

Episode 5 started off with a big-boy battle at the Furniture Factory! Rodney Rockchild is a pretty intimidating guy, but the Mongrel scares me on a completely different level. It’s the wild-ass savage look and how the guy moves around like a beast attacking its prey. We’ve seen the Mongrel do some in-ring damage before on Action Clash, but this was the first time we saw someone the size of Rockchild take him on. Despite being dominated for a good portion of the beginning, Rodney managed to get some defense halfway through the match. The Mongrel is big and bad, but Rodney is no small challenge. In the end, however, the Mongrel got another victory and continues his dominant streak. Can anybody in New South put this monster down?

Match 2: Wasted Generation (Shean Christopher and Kevin Ryan) vs. the Dojo Boyz (Leo and Erron ‘Baby Dragon’ Wade)

LET’S GO DOJO BOYZ! Anyone who’s new to New South or Action Clash needs to know about Erron Wade and the judo machine that is Leo. I’d love to see both these guys booked in more places soon, so I’m hoping eyes are on the Boyz. I’ll say that this was a good match to showcase their skills, because the competition doesn’t get much tougher than Wasted Generation. Arguably the top tag team challengers in New South (and Kevin & Shean are the main ones who’d argue that point to death), Wasted Generation is a perfect match for the equally skilled Dojo Boyz. As impressed as I am with Leo and Erron, they don’t yet have the polished team style of those doggone Akuto Death Society boys. Let’s face it, Kevin & Shean work together as solid as a rock. Wasted Generation was able to outdo the Boyz in the end and get the pinfall win. All about the finesse with those damn kids. More Dojo Boyz in Action Clash matches, please!

Main Event: Derek Neal vs. Kung Fu Donnie Janela (New South Heavyweight Championship match)

And here’s where the magic happened! We started off this main event with Derek Neal at his peak. Who could stop him? He’s the champ, he’s a badass, and he’s got backup in the often ornery Adam Priest and the rarely sober Steven Michaels. They were the ones running things, and the match that we were supposed to have - the match where Suge D would be the challenger - was not to happen due to unforeseen circumstances. No Suge, no challenger, and it looked like Derek and his crew would have the night off.

NOPE! Enter Kung Fu Janela! That’s right, Donnie saw his opportunity and ran with it. Now, granted, I knew that Donnie would be getting a beating at the hands of Derek Neal. The King’s Road Slayer is just that dude you expect to beat your ass regardless. However, the amount of punishment Donnie took in this one was massive. I mean he took every slam and punch and chop you can think of. There was no need for backup, but Priest and Michaels stayed right there at ringside to gloat because they’re jerks and it was closer to the bar than backstage was.

And Donnie. Took. That. Punishment.

He took that punishment, that is, until he saw his opening and took it. Donnie still had it in him to power back, much to everybody’s shock. In fact, he was able to come back from that beating enough to turn the tide of the match in his favor...and that’s when Priest and Michaels were at their dirtiest. They used the huge-ass belt as a weapon in the match, but thankfully it backfired. Steven Michaels, genius that he is, even decided to use ME, your intrepid journalist, as a pawn in his cheating scheme to throw off the referee! I was sitting there (well, standing whenever Donnie hit a huge move) not doing a thing and I was accused of being a distraction! I BOUGHT MY TICKET, SIR!

But I was vindicated! The ref plan backfired as well, because damn if Donnie didn’t use the distraction (I will not admit to being a distraction, that was the Alpha Wolf’s fault) to his advantage. By the time there was an official in the ring again, Derek Neal was down for the count and Donnie went for the pin. No way...could it really be? The ref’s hand hit the mat for a third time and it was REAL! New South has a new heavyweight champ, and his name is Kung Fu Donnie Janela!

Post-Show Thoughts

What have I been saying all year? I told you so! 2020 was the year everybody got to know who Donnie Janela is. The guy’s been making the best out of these unprecedented times, and I think that the hustle that we’ve seen from Donnie this year led us right to this place he’s got as champion. 2021 is set for even better things coming for the Steel Dragon; he most definitely deserves it after putting in all of the work this year!
