This week’s main event of Action Clash is a wonderful reminder of how great and how fun independent wrestling can be when everyone decides to enjoy the moment. Granted, using an absolute classic banger of an 80s song as your entrance music helps. Still, Episode 21 introduces us to the team of Double Down and I promise you it’s a damn good time. We’ll see some solid tag work throughout this episode as well with the tag team championship on the line and two singles bouts that look just as good in the ring as they do in the match lineup.

On Commentary: Mose and Carmen Michael

If you’re enjoying this commentary pairing as much as I am, be sure to check out their numerous goings-on throughout social media in addition to their work with New South! Both Carmen and Mose are active all over the southern independent wrestling scene; this should be the year that both of them become much more visible nationwide. Each week they keep the energy going strong all hour long and it’s worthy of notice.

Match 1: I Am Sam vs. Cabana Man Dan

School was in session for this week’s opening match and Sam did not have the benefit of virtual learning from CMD! Sam must have figured there’d be safety in numbers as he came to the ring with his entourage of DL and Kris McInnis (minus Babie, who’s now running with a sicker crew). Sam’s been pretty big in his britches lately, particularly towards Dan. Now was Dan’s opportunity to put Sam in his place. CMD’s a masterful teacher, but this match showed us that Sam’s learned quite a bit himself. If Sam’s learned so much, though, shouldn’t he be able to show off without his friends around to help out?

Great opening match that saw CMD get the win using a skilled pinfall combination. Sam’s getting there, but he’s not yet near the level of New South’s workhorse. Line of the night goes to Carmen Michael after CMD delivers a hard kick to Sam’s face: “That kick to the face isn’t gonna help his Disney career whatsoever.”

Match 2: Petty In Pink (Kenzie Page and Dillon McQueen) w/Babie vs. Talladega Knights (Hunter Drake and Tyler Franks) - New South Tag Team Championship Match

As much as we all enjoyed this week’s main event, it was this tag match for the championship gold that stole the show. I’ve said it before that the tag team scene in the southern indies is in a boom period right now and both the Knights and Petty In Pink prove it by delivering bangers no matter where they go. Since this one was for the gold, everybody went absolutely wild. Hunter Drake and Tyler Franks continue to amaze me whether they’re competing together or going solo. As tag team specialists, however, they’re on top of the scene right now. That praise can only go so far, however, because Kenzie Page and Dillon McQueen have no intention of giving up their gold (since it goes so well with pink!) and they’re just as talented as the Knights - even if they have to use underhanded tactics to gain the advantage and the victory. I see Hunter and Tyler as the more polished team, though.

After the match, Petty In Pink continued to attack Hunter and Tyler, leaving them prone in the ring for Derek Neal, Steven Michaels, and Tony Frank to finish off. The Cortège further asserted their dominance on the Knights as a result, leaving us all ready to see the Talladega Knights rally back at We Love Pro Wrestling on February 6th and get some well-deserved revenge on Neal and his gang!

Match 3: Brandon Williams vs. Adam Priest

This one was every bit as good as I thought it’d be; two of the greatest pure wrestlers in New South going toe to toe! Even though I love to hate Adam Priest, he’s incredible at what he does in the ring. Put him against a technical wizard like Brandon Williams and you’re looking at an instant classic match. We got some of the best from both Priest and the Locksmith in this one, too. Excellent match that could have gone either way at some points, but Priest came through with the win in the end after catching Brandon with a quick rollup pin. You can’t get more Priest than that finish! I’d love to see another match between these two sometime soon; I just wanna see Brandon get a quick rollup pin of his own...and then make a classic gif of Priest’s reaction.

Main Event: Double Down (Suge D and Donnie Janela) vs Eric Havok and Trevor Wolf

All honesty, I was not familiar at all with Havok and Wolf prior to this match. And I didn’t remember their names until I started writing this recap, either. Why? Because all of my damn attention was (and still is) on Double Down! I was there live for this party and it was just as much fun to watch again on IWTV. Everything about Suge and Donnie tagging together is just right - the Bon Jovi entrance music, the energy, the quality of both wrestlers...New South is excellent at showing you all of the elements of what makes a tag team great. The match itself is just as fun as the entrance; Wolf and Havok are new to me but they’re definitely seasoned enough to work a main event match with two of the south’s top guys. Great work by all around that resulted in a very satisfying win for Suge and Donnie, who ended the show just as they started the match, singing with all of the New South faithful joining in.

Post-Show Thoughts

We love Double Down, right? We want more Double Down, yes? Thankfully we’ll get exactly what we want on Saturday, February 6th as Suge D and Donnie Janela tag up once again at We Love Pro Wrestling, the event that kicks off a great season of action for New South. Don’t forget we’ve still got HOSS in the weeks ahead and so much more to look forward to with Action Clash. With everything going on in the promotion at the moment, this is a prime opportunity to get new eyes on the product. Spread the word for your fellow wrestling fans to get on board with IWTV and join in the live-tweet party every Tuesday night!
