Coming off of the heels of an excellent 2021 HOSS Tournament, Episode 26 of Action Clash featured two of the promotion’s current rivalries - the split of the Dojo Boyz is more like a fracture now that Erron Wade and Leo are at war, and meanwhile the returning Tyler Matrix and Logan James have targeted the Talladega Knights on their path to the top of the ever-active New South tag team scene. In addition to all of the newest action, Episode 26 also takes us back to the finals of the HOSS 2019 Tournament, a turning point in the promotion’s future.

On Commentary: Carmen Michael and Mose

Praise to the New South commentary team for a job very well done on Episode 26 as well as both nights of this year’s HOSS Tournament! Whether it’s individual or as a team, both Mose and Carmen continue to bring their best game. It’s impressive to me that these two have meshed so well in less than a year; I imagine they’ll only get even better as Action Clash goes on into post-HOSS season.

Match 1: 2 Fly Ty vs. The Mongrel

This week’s episode started off with 2 Fly Ty making bad decisions. Although this isn’t new to Ty, maybe he should have held off on his approach to New South General Manager Dump Sanders. Why? Because Dump was all too happy to comply with Ty’s demand for a match...in fact, he’d be taking on the Mongrel. Pretty safe to say Ty’s competition was a little more than on his level on this occasion. I will say Ty lasted longer against the Mongrel than I gave him credit for, because he did hold his own against one of New South’s most fearsome on the roster.

However, just as the Mongrel had Ty down for the final chokeslam, the other most fearsome on New South’s roster hit the ring. Brett Ison ended the opening match with an attack on the Mongrel that can only be seen as foreshadowing if you’ve watched this year’s HOSS Tournament. As we know now, Ison defeated and disgraced the Mongrel in the Tournament by having him unmask. In hindsight, this was the final Mongrel match as we knew him. How will we know him from here on out?

Match 2: Erron Wade vs. Leo

This bust up of the Dojo Boyz has all of my attention. One reason is because it breaks my heart, I’ve always loved Erron Wade, Donnie Janela, and Leo as a group and as individuals. I cannot, however, support this new overly aggressive Leo that we’re seeing in the ring. Neither can Erron Wade, because the Baby Dragon himself was not one to back down from a match with Leo despite coming to the ring with a pronounced limp. Surely Leo thought this was his opportunity to humiliate his former partner, but Erron had something entirely different for Leo. It came in the form of a solid kick to the head and a quick pinfall victory for the Baby Dragon! Pretty frustrating lesson for Leo to learn (don’t tempt a dragon), but we are far from finished with seeing who’s going to get schooled in this feud.

Match 3: LadyKillerz (Daniel Perez & Rodney Rockchild) w/Dy-Lan vs. Body Shop (Jason Jennings, Johnny Pipes, and Thunder Thighs) w/Grease Monkey

Recently I saw written on the wall in lipstick in the JC Arena ladies’ room ‘For a good time call the LadyKillerz’ and I agreed, because this six-man tag was a damn good time. What makes it even better? Add my guy Dy-Lan to the team and it’s a party! On the other hand I’ve yet to see anything in the ladies’ room about the Body Shop, but the writing is on the wall that they’re here to stay and to get on my nerves forever with their bragging about how great they are. If that was the case, why did it take Grease Monkey’s interference in a three-on-three fight for the Body Shop to get the advantage?! The surprise here is that the Body Shop got the upset win, but nobody’s surprised at how they got the win. They cheated!

Throwback Match: HOSS 2019 Finals

This week’s episode featured a pivotal throwback moment in New South history - the final moments of the HOSS 2019 Tournament. Definitely a must-watch show (available on IWTV!) in its entirety, but the finals aired on Episode 26 have a magic of their own. We see the final four competitors (Cabana Man Dan, Baron Black, Cheeseburger, and Donnie Janela) do amazing work against one another. It’s so wild to see this match from two years ago and know that all involved have unprecedented times and career highs ahead of them. Seeing Cabana Man Dan win the 2019 HOSS finals is a moving moment; I started watching New South at the end of that year and it’s very cool to see CMD sporting the orange jacket and ushering the promotion into the era we know today.

Main Event: Talladega Knights (Hunter Drake & Tyler Franks) vs. Infrared (Tyler Matrix & Logan James)

This main event is the best argument I’ve seen yet as to why Action Clash needs to be more than an hour long. These two teams could easily go all day. I can see why, too - this is the first we’ve really seen of Tyler Matrix and Logan James in the New South ring in the longest time. They had every expectation of going wild, and they most certainly did. However, to go up against the Talledega Knights almost immediately upon their return? That’s a pretty gutsy move; that’s something that you do only if you know you’re up for that sort of competition. Hunter Drake & Tyler Franks are at the top of their game in the tag team division and they showed Matrix & James what was up from bell to bell. That’s in the actual sense, too - this match went until the very last second with the bell sounding no winner due to time limit constraints. This is likely the most frustrating ending to Action Clash yet!

Post-Show Thoughts

Thankfully we get a Knights/Infrared rematch soon enough; on March 20th these two teams will face off in the ring once again and I think it’s safe to say that match will have a winner! This was a solid follow-up show, getting New South fans back into the swing of things just days after the huge HOSS Tournament weekend. Now that this year’s HOSS season has ended, New South has a long, hot summer to look forward to with a number of new and ongoing feuds heating up and plenty of surprises in store at upcoming shows. It’s awesome to watch all of this go down on IWTV, but the best way to experience New South is live and in person! Now that travel is opening up around the US again, I’m extending an invitation to everyone to make their way to Alabama this summer to catch a show at the JC Arena; the Best In The South is more than ready to show off for the whole country!
