Indie Wrestling Spotlight: WTF is CFU???

Indie Wrestling Spotlight: WTF is CFU???

by @olskoololfool

When I first saw bits and pieces about this new promotion on Twitter, every wee crumb of info got me more and more intrigued.  Women's promotion?  Cool, we can always use more of those!  Shoot-Style?  I'm enjoying things like Bloodsport and UWFi Contenders, works for this fan.

The names started getting dropped as for which athletes were on board, some of the toughest and brightest on the Indies, all primed to throw down.  The excitement built further still.

Then, that trailer.

"Traditional" pro wrestling steel cage, no ropes, a familiar tune...my brain was cooking trying to take it all in.  I absolutely had to learn more before the debut on Thursday June 24th at 8E/7C on the award-winning IWTV (independentwrestling.tv).  Here's the results of my rampant curiosity in the form of several questions which the folks at CFU were kind enough to answer.

1)  What is CFU?

CFU: "Combat Fights Unlimited is a shoot-style promotion looking to more fully blend the worlds of professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. Specifically, we lean more towards the "old-school" era of MMA, with one-night tournaments, fighters representing specific disciplines, and less-regulated fight attire/gear."

2)  Please describe the CFU concept.

CFU: "The CFU rules are similar to the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, but with a few key differences.  Rounds are three minutes instead of five, as in amateur MMA.  In addition, things like 12-6 elbows and soccer kicks are not considered fouls under CFU rules.  Contests CANNOT end via pinfall, only by knockout, submission, referee stoppage, or judge's decision if the bout goes the distance."

3)  How did you come up with the idea?

CFU: "Honestly, it's just something I always wanted to see.  Nobody was mixing MMA and pro wrestling QUITE like this (though some shows/promotions have come close).  Finally, I just decided the heck with it, I'll do it myself."

4)  Who can we all expect to see?

CFU: "The roster for this first show has been fully revealed.  We have a few names we'd love to bring in for any future shows that for various reasons (time, scheduling, and even contract issues), we were unable to get this time.  In terms of who we'd want to "highlight," there's the tournament participants themselves, obviously, but we also have Allysin Kay taking on Edith Surreal in a non-tournament "Superfight," a la early UFC PPVs."

5)  What are some of the not-so-obvious things that make CFU different from what's out there?

CFU:  "For whatever reason, no one has ever done shoot-style bouts in a wrestling cage, but without ropes.  It seemed like the most obvious thing in the world to me if you're trying to mix those two disciplines, but for some reason no one does it.  We're also broken up into rounds, with judges scoring each round individually a la the Impact Grand Championship or even old-school AWF.  It's cliché as hell, but we're definitely going for more of a "real sports feel."

6)  Any hopes for live events in the future?

CFU: "Absolutely.  Stay tuned for more on that in the somewhat-near future!"

7)  In one sentence, why should people tune in to the June 24th debut on IWTV?

CFU: "Because it's never been done."

"To my knowledge, no one has ever had a one-night, eight-woman shoot-style tournament, and DEFINITELY not under these rules.  It is quite literally something you cannot get anywhere else."
